B-CU President Dr. Edison O. Jackson

Chairman John W. Harrington of the Bethune-Cookman University Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Edison O. Jackson as the University's 6th president.  Dr. Jackson served as interim president since the retirement last May of Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed.

"President Jackson has brought the emphasis on academic excellence and our core values that was sorely needed." said Chairman Harrington. Following the unanimous vote to appoint him as president, Dr. Jackson commented, "It is quite an honor to be selected by the Board of Trustees of Bethune-Cookman University and serve as the permanent president ushering in a new era of excellence for this University".

Chairman Harrington added, "The Board realized during its January retreat that we had in place an interim president who represents the kind of leader we sought to be president." The chairman also reflected that the presentation by Dr. Charles Reed, recently retired chancellor of the California State University system, solidified Board support for Dr. Jackson's presidency. Dr. Reed outlined point by point what was needed for a successful University in the 21st Century and the board realized Dr. Jackson had already taken the initial steps in leading Bethune-Cookman University in the direction outlined.

Dr. Jackson's tenure will begin immediately and will conclude July 1, 2016. A search committee will be appointed in January 2015 to lead the search for a new president. This will be Dr. Jackson's 3rd presidency, having served as president of Compton Community College in Compton, CA and Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York.

The date for the formal presidential inauguration will be announced next week.

Franklin Beckwith '59 Donates $60,000 to B-CU

Franklin Beckwith, who is blind, couldn’t see the expanse of the current campus. But, he said he wants to be a part of educating the next generation and contribute to the school’s growth. Thus, he proudly delivered a check for $60,000 to Bethune-Cookman University, and quietly asked that the funds be used to help current students pay for their education.
