Federal Work-Study

The Federal Work Study (FWS) Program will provide employment opportunities for students with a financial need. The FWS Program enables students to work and earn money during the academic year. This program is housed in the Bethune-Cookman University Office of Student Financial Aid which is responsible for referring students selected to participate in the program and confirming eligibility of student participants. The program is designed to create new and expanded job opportunities and to enable as many students to work as possible. (NOTE:  EVERY STUDENT THAT APPLIES FOR WORK STUDY WILL NOT RECEIVE A POSITION.)

Work Study Student Eligibility

Work Study students, who are employed part-time during the academic year must:

a)    apply (on time) each year for financial aid with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before March 15th of each year.
b)    be a PELL Grant recipient
c)    be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
d)    be admitted to and enrolled as a full time student at B-CU
e)    maintain good academic standing while employed under the program by meeting the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements established by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships (2.0 grade point average or better)
f)    show a financial need
g)    complete and submit additional documents requested by the office of Student Financial Aid.

Note: Graduate Students, International Students, Residential Life Assistance and Athletes are not permitted to participate in the Federal Work-Study program.

Work Study Student cannot:

a)    displace employees (including those on strike) or impair existing service contracts.
b)    be involve in any religious or political activity, or lobbying on the federal level.
c)    primarily benefit the members of an organization that has membership limits, such as a credit union, a fraternal or religious order, or a cooperative.
d)    Perform duties inappropriate and not reasonable considering the type of work performed in the geographical region, a proficiency of each employee.
e)    Student cannot transfer themselves to another department without permission from the Financial Aid Office.


Supervisor Responsibilities

  1. All Supervisors are required to submit a job description before April 30th of each year. Job Descriptions received after the deadline date will not be filled until after October 1, 2010 or last day of registration.
  2. No student will be allowed to begin work until all paperwork has been received in the Financial Aid Office. 
  3. Supervisors cannot transfer a student out of his/her department without approval from the Financial Aid Office. 
  4. Supervisors cannot hire a student from another department unless approved by the Financial Aid Office.
  5. The Financial Aid Office is responsible for verifying that the student is enrolled full-time during each term the student is employed.
