Audition Requirements

*These Requirements are for Placement as a Music Major and are Separate from Auditions for all Band and Choral Programs.

*Students not Meeting These Standards but Showing Potential for Success may be Assigned Probation Status for one Semester Requiring a Re-Audition.

Brass Instruments

[Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba]

  • Applicants are asked to prepare music that represents both lyrical and technical abilities.  Etude or Solo material is preferable and piano accompaniment is not necessary. 
  • Applicants should also be prepared to play major scales that represent their full range and abilities. 
  • Recorded auditions are acceptable and should use the best recording quality possible. 
  • Possible sight-reading excerpt

Woodwind Instruments

[Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon and Saxophone]

  • Applicants are asked to prepare music that represents both lyrical and technical abilities.  Etude or Solo material is preferable and piano accompaniment is not necessary. 
  • Applicants should also be prepared to play major scales that represent their full range and abilities. 
  • Recorded auditions are acceptable and should use the best recording quality possible. 
  • Possible sight-reading excerpt

Piano

  • Two works of contrasting style with at least one from a major style period: Baroque, Classic, Romantic, Impressionist, and Contemporary.
  • Major scales at least 2 octaves up to 4 flats and 4 sharps.
  • Sight-reading excerpt

Percussion

[At least 2 of the following – Snare, Keyboard with 2 or 4 mallets, Timpani, Drumset]

  • Applicants are asked to prepare music that represents both lyrical and technical abilities.
  • Additionally, and where applicable, the 40 International Drum Rudiments (Snare),
  • Major scales 2 octaves (Keyboard),
  • Tuning (Timpani),
  • Various playing styles (Drumset)
  • Sight-reading excerpt

Voice

  • Two arias or songs in contrasting styles with at least one in Italian, French, or German.
  • Be prepared to vocalize to demonstrate range, agility, and projection.
  • Recorded auditions are acceptable and should use the best recording quality possible. 
  • Possible sight-reading excerpt

Franklin Beckwith '59 Donates $60,000 to B-CU

Franklin Beckwith, who is blind, couldn’t see the expanse of the current campus. But, he said he wants to be a part of educating the next generation and contribute to the school’s growth. Thus, he proudly delivered a check for $60,000 to Bethune-Cookman University, and quietly asked that the funds be used to help current students pay for their education.
