CESSM, IAEMP and the B. J. Moore Center of Excellence in IES

BCU has officially initiated the B. J. Moore Center of Excellence in Integrated Environmental Science! The Center will focus on methods for use in developing integrated ecosystem assessments, including Coupled Ecological-Societal Systems Models (CESSMs) and the Integrated Assessment and Ecosystem Management Protocol (IAEMP), and offers degrees in Integrated Environmental Science at the Bachelors and Masters levels. Contact Dr. Reiter for more information on CESSMs and the IAEMP, the Center, and/or the programs of the Department of Integrated Environmental Science.

Coupled Ecological-Societal Systems Models (CESSMs)

The manuscripts concerning the CESSM methodology are out. In order, they are:

Reiter, M. A., G. R. Parsons, R. W. Scarborough, C. Fan, and S. M. Thur. 2006. An interdisciplinary conceptual metamodel for the St. Jones River watershed, Delaware: Development, results, and implications. J. Environ. Monit. Restor. 2:38-50.

Reiter, M. A. 2004. A simple fuzzy logic approach to analyze integrated interdisciplinary “four-component” conceptual resource management models. Interdisc. Environ. Rev. 6(2):1-13.

Example narrowed models and models from the manuscript (may require Internet Explorer) are available here.

Conceptual Ecosystem Model (CEM)

The first draft of the Conceptual Ecosystem Model (CESSM) for the St. Jones River watershed is now complete. You can download the zipped 2/20/03 version of the model as an Excel file (with matrices), or view an on-line version. Click this link to download the zipped version of the conceptual model (provides a clearer file and better formatting, but will require an unzipping utility). If you can't use the zipped version, click this link to browse the on-line version of the conceptual model (spacing, figures, etc. may be less than optimal, and may require Microsoft Explorer).

Integrated Assessment and Ecosystem Management Protocol (IAEMP)

The IAEMP protocol manuscript is also out. It is:

Reiter, M. A., G. C. Matlock, J. H. Gentile, M. A. Harwell, R. Kelty, J. Barko, S. Baker, and G. Scott. 2013. An integrated framework for informing coastal and marine ecosystem management decisions. Journal of Environmental Assessment, Policy, and Management 15(1) (March 2013) 1350003-1 – 1350003-22. DOI: 10.1142/S1464333213500038.

Interested in Being a Part of the Program?

At the undergraduate level, the BSIES degree program is a restricted major, with coursework, gpa, and research requirements in order to enter the program and to matriculate. For further information on the undergraduate degree program, click here. MSIES program enrollment is competitive and is based on gpa, GRE scores, writing samples, and perceived ability in interdisciplinary study. Further information on the MSIES degree program can be found here.  IES may also have limited scholarship funding available for undergraduate and Masters students majoring in Integrated Environmental Science. Application for scholarship positions is competitive, and is based upon overall GPA, GPA in field science and environmentally-related courses, and the program director’s evaluation of the applicant’s interest, drive, and ability to provide quality data for the program. If you would like information on becoming an IES student, contact Dr. Reiter using the e-mail links on this web page.
