“Celebrating the 138th Birthday of our Founder”

On July 10, 2013, we celebrated the birthday of our founder Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. Local community members as well as members of the Bethune-Cookman University Family, gathered to honor the legacy of a great woman. Presentations of historic newspaper articles on the life and times of Dr. Bethune were made by Mrs. Larry Hyde and Dr. Shirley Lee to the Dean of Libraries, Dr. Tasha Youmans. The articles will be housed in the Carl S. Swisher Library and will be available to researchers seeking to learn more about Mrs. Bethune. Greetings were brought by Special Assistant to the Vice President, Mrs. Daisy Grimes and prayers were lifted by Minister John Baldwin. The Open House and birthday festivities in the Foundation were led by Dr. Ashley Robertson, the home’s Curator/Director as everyone gathered to sing Happy Birthday in celebration of Mrs. Bethune. Several of Mrs. Bethune’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren attended, along with members of the Women’s Advisory Board and youth from the Black Male College Explorers Program just to name a few. Birthday celebrations were also held in Washington, DC by the National Park Service and the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House-National Historic Site.
